Road Trips
Washington
State
Seattle,
Washington to Northern California
Gary, Suzanne, Melinda and myself took this scenic 3-day
road trip along
the Oregon Coast to the Redwoods of Northern California.
We stayed overnight
at Florence, Oregon and Crescent City, California.
Seattle, Washington to
Ocean Shores, Washington
Our family would travel to the Pacific beaches at Ocean
Shores for weekend camping and razor clamming.
Seattle, Washington to Sekiu,
Washington
Our family would typically spend several days fishing
for salmon in the Strait of Juan de Fuca; mooring overnight at the
fishing village / marina at Sekiu. On the way to Sekiu
is a great beach for butter clams and oysters near Port Ludlow.
Seattle, Washington to
Potlatch, Washington
Potlatch was a yearly retreat to go camping and crabbing
around the Fourth of July.
Seattle, Washington to Pe
Ell and Castle Rock, Washington
Pe Ell is an old logging town in the heart of Washington’s
Pacific forest.
We would head to Castle Rock on the Cowlitz River to go
smelting.
Seattle, Washington to
Snoqualmie Falls and Snoqualmie Pass
Snoqualmie Falls is a great afternoon destination for
visitors to Seattle. It is an
opportunity to see the forests, mountains, and falls of the Pacific
Northwest; only ~45 minutes from the city. Salish Lodge at Snoqualmie Falls
is a great example of Pacific Northwest architecture and a favorite place
for couples to spend a weekend. The Lodge was featured in “Twin Peaks.”
Further east at Snoqualmie Pass are three ski areas: Alpental, Hyak, and
Snoqualmie Pass (these three ski areas have since combined). In the
summertime, this area is also a great place to hike and mountain bike. A
few miles further east is Roslyn, Washington which was
made famous by the TV show “Northern Exposure.”
Seattle, Washington to
Stevens Pass
Stevens Pass is a favorite ski area for many Washington
skiers in the intermediate/advanced category.
Seattle, Washington to
Mount Baker
Mount Baker, near the Canadian border, is another
favorite back-country skiing and snowboarding destination in Western
Washington. Mount Baker was one of the first winter recreational areas to
embrace snowboarding.
Seattle, Washington to
Crystal Mountain Ski Resort
My favorite ski resort in Washington State is Crystal
Mountain. This is the largest ski resort in Washington state with many
mountains, trails, and slopes for skiers of all ability.
At the summit house, there is also fantastic vista of Mount Rainier to the
southwest.
Seattle, Washington to
Anacortes, Washington
Anacortes has some great areas to go fishing and
crabbing.
It also is the jumping off point to visit the beautiful
San Juan Islands.
Famous destinations are Roche Harbor Resort and Marina,
and Rosario Resort.
Seattle, Washington to
Lake Chelan, Washington
Chelan in Eastern Washington state is arid and sunny, in
sharp contrast to
Western Washington. A great place to water ski, jet ski,
and camp/vacation.
Seattle, Washington to
Portland and Seaside, Oregon
Portland is a smaller city than Seattle, however, the
Rose City has own charm. Seaside, Oregon is the largest beach town in the
Pacific Northwest. The boardwalk attracts many vacationers from Washington
and Oregon. Near by is historic Astoria.
Seattle, Washington to
Mount Rainier
Very scenic day-trip around Mount Rainier. Stop at
Paradise Lodge and
Explore the many trails, lakes, and picnic areas on the
mountain.
Seattle, Washington to
Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler, BC is an internationally acclaimed ski resort.
Many younger Australian skiers spend their summers working in Canadian ski
areas. On the way to Whistler, BC is scenic Howe Sound. Squamish, BC at the
head of the sound is a great place for rock-climbing.
Seattle, Washington to
Leavenworth, Washington
Leavenworth is a Bavarian vacation town in sunny Eastern
Washington.
Seattle, Washington to
Moses Lake, Washington
Seattle, Washington to the
(Columbia River) Gorge
Hood River is one of the top three places to windsurf in
the U.S. (Hawaii and Corpus Christi, TX are two other “great” areas).
Hood River is unique in that it is on a large river (the
Columbia) that cuts through the Cascade Mountain Range. Eastern
Washington/Oregon is warm and dry, while Western Washington/Oregon is cool
and cloudy. The different climate zones create fantastic wind conditions
along the Gorge.
Seattle, Washington to
Yakima and Sunnyside, Washington
Yakima is in the heart of Washington State’s orchard
country; many apple and cherry orchards dot the valley. A few miles
southeast is Sunnyside, the heart of Washington
wine-country. Many vineyards grow world-renown grapes in the arid climate.
Bangkok, Thailand to
Northeast Thailand
Northeast Thailand is geographically separated from the
rest of Thailand by two rugged mountain ranges. This area is known as
“I-san” and is culturally and linguistically similar to
Laos. Laos (eastern side of the Mekong River) was separated from Siam by
French colonization. Along some mountain tops are fantastic temple ruins of
the ancient Khmer.
Bangkok, Thailand to
Northern Thailand
Bangkok, Thailand to
Southern Thailand
I have traveled to 72 of 76 provinces of Thailand. The Thai coast along Andaman Sea is
stunning.
Paris, France to
Versailles and Rouen, France
Sydney, Australia to the
Blue Mountains
Los Angeles, California Basin
Erie, Pennsylvania to
Niagara Falls and Toronto, Ontario
Niagara Falls attracts visitors from around the world.
The Canadian side of the falls is more scenic than the American side.
Toronto, Canada has the CN Tower – one of the highest man-made structures
in the world. On one level of the observation deck, you can walk across a
glass floor far above the city skyline.
Boston, Massachusetts to
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Large houses in Salem to the quaint fishing town of
Gloucester Bay.
Boston, Massachusetts to
Washington, DC
Washington, DC to
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and return
Take Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah on the return.
New York City, New York to
Saratoga Springs and Chautauqua, New York
A few miles southwest of Chautauqua, NY is Peek N Peak
Resort and Conference Center. In the wintertime there is skiing, and in the
summertime, golfing is popular. Between Peek N Peak and Brookville, PA is
Titusville and Oil City; the very first places oil was discovered and
produced in the U.S.
London, UK to Portsmouth,
UK
Manchester, UK to the
Midlands and Pershall, UK
Between Liverpool and Birmingham, a few miles northwest
of Stafford, is Pershall; a small village in the heart of England.
The Midlands, UK to
Snowdonia and Holyhead, Wales
Welsh can be heard on the radio crossing the mountain
pass from England into Wales. The mountains of Snowdonia
are rocky and barren. Quaint villages are situated along
tree groves in small river valleys. Many bed and breakfast inns
dot the route along the Lleyn peninsula to Aberdaron.
Holyhead is located just off the northwestern tip of
Angelsey Island. A ferry runs from Holyhead to Dublin,
Ireland.
Holyhead, Wales to
Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh, Scotland to
Glasgow and Aberdeen, Scotland

tankers ply the route.
