The original wooden town
burnt down in January 1904 and was subsequently rebuilt
from 1904 to 1907 with stone in Art-Nouveau architecture. Many of the
town’s residences were saved from the harsh winter
when Kaiser Wilhelm, the German Emperor, sent ships with supplies to last
the winter. He also paid for much of the reconstruction.
